The Piasta Dynasty or Dynasty of the Piastas is a lineage of kings and dukes who ruled Poland from its appearance as an independent state until 1370. The descendants of the Piastas continued to reign in different duchies stemming from the fragmentation of Polish territory, in Mazovia until 1526 and in Silesia until 1675.
Origin of the name
Although the first dukes and kings of Poland considered themselves Piasto descendants, the term "Piasta dynasty" came from the 17th century:[1][2] historians working for some rulers of the duchies in Silesia came up with the concept. The term was first used by Adam Naruszewicz in his History of the Polish Nation.
